Experience:

Darren O'Connor has held various positions with the New York State Police Counsel's Office for eleven years; two of those as Chief Counsel and four as Deputy Counsel. The Office of Counsel provides legal advice to the Superintendent of State Police on all matters, including litigation strategies, employment matters, contractual arrangements with private vendors and public agencies, and a significant array of criminal prosecution issues.

Prior to joining the State Police, Mr. O’Connor was an Assistant Attorney General and Section Head in the Office of the New York State Attorney General. He represented numerous State agencies and employees in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Matters assigned to Mr. O’Connor included Section 1983 lawsuits against individual State officers and employees, class actions seeking injunctive relief, Article 78 proceedings challenging a broad range of agency determinations, defense of State statutes against constitutional challenges, and actions against the federal government demanding reimbursement for public assistance payments. His practice took him to courtrooms across the State, the Appellate Divisions, the Court of Appeals, each of the four United States District Courts within New York State and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.


Mr. O'Connor was in private practice as an litigation attorney with Debevoise and Plimpton, in New York City, where he gained valuable experience working with such accomplished partners as John Koeltl (now U.S. District Court Judge) and Mario Baeza. Darren served a two-year clerkship for Judge Judith S. Kaye upon her appointment to the New York Court of Appeals in 1983. He assisted Judge Kaye on a wide range of criminal and civil cases before the Court.


After working as a professional actor during high school, college and law school, in 1980, Mr. O’Connor began his legal career with the Criminal Appeals Bureau of the Legal Aid Society in New York City, where he served as a Staff Attorney and later a Supervising Attorney. He represented clients in the Appellate Division, First and Second Departments, and New York Court of Appeals.

has been practicing law for more than thirty years.  He is admitted to practice law in the State of New York, and in the United States District Courts for the Western, Northern, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.


Education:

Mr. O'Connor holds a B.A. degree (1976) and J.D. degree (1980) from Fordham University.
